The RHS Military History and U.S. Government Teacher is under the instruction of Tony R. Malone, Jr.
In studying Ancient Greece, the students are exposed to the Greek style of combat, the Phalanx. It is a formation of men shield to shield and several ranks in depth. They advance until contact with the enemy is made. The depth and power of the mass formation attempt to break the enemy’s line driving the enemy from the field and winning the day. The key is maintaining the integrity of the Phalanx formation. By having the students create a shield, they are then able to practice some of the basic movements of the ancient Greeks. They will experience how difficult it was to maintain the Phalanx and understand the pros and cons of the formation. The students also get to have some creativity in not only selecting the style of shield but the design on it also.
